UAE-based digital shop Flip Media last month launched its first regional iPhone application, Naviflix. The app is aimed at movie-goers in the Middle East, and gives users access to movie listings and show times for cinemas across the UAE.
“Web sites with cinema listings aren’t very iPhone friendly,” says Yousef Tuqan Tuqan, CEO of Flip Media. “The next wave is the mobile Web, as it’s the only device we have everywhere all the time. So there was a missing gap for movie lovers, a place to check what’s playing where. Through Naviflix, you can check movie listings, trailers, show times, photos, show the location of cinemas on a map, and share with friends via e-mail, Twitter or Facebook, and make it social.”
Naviflix is also compatible with Blackberry, Nokia N Series, and Android phones. Flip is also working on a version for the iPad, and on customizing Naviflix for other regional markets. Touqan says Naviflix was designed to be able to integrate with cinema mobile ticketing, and he hopes to partner with local cinemas looking to enable ticket purchasing through mobile phones.
Naviflix costs $1.99 to download from iTunes, although there is a free, mobile-friendly Web version available, which carries advertising. Touqan says Naviflix is an investment on Flip’s part, although he doesn’t think the company will get rich on the back of one application. “We are exploring the mobile space,” he explains. “We wouldn’t be doing this if we didn’t see a business opportunity.”
